A family holiday with two children under two
Last week I took the family on holiday and the main objective was to keep the kids occupied (two kids under two!). We hired a lovely cottage between Swanage and Corfe Castle. Having spent my summer holidays as a kid camping at Corfe Castle this was like taking a trip down memory lane (with out the cow pats!). The weather was excellent considering we on the verge of November. Our first excursion was to Studland
- this is a lovely part of the Dorset coast that has some stunning beaches and a lovely pub. We walked from Studland to King Harry's Rocks and you get a great view of the most expensive real estate in England, Sandbanks. After pushing a double push chair for c3 miles a pint was well deserved.
The second day was all about the son - we got the Swanage Railway from Corfe Castle to Swanage on an old steam train - beats watching Thomas on Cbeebies trust me! The line and stations have been restored to their former glory with log fires and all train personal dressed in original uniform. Needless to say the boy was impressed and 'chu chu' was the buzz word for the rest of the holiday. The next day was again stepping back in time but this time hunting fossils at Limmeridge - wow! I found so many impressive fossils and felt like a kid again. My son decided that the dark sand was marmite and proceeded to make marmite rock sandwiches using his spade to spread evenly across the rocks. Looked great but by his expression didn't quite match the real thing! Day three we hit Swanage and the pier. This is a lovely seaside town that has a great beach (my aim was an hour a day of beach duty!). I built the sand castles and my son jumped on them - I gave up trying to make impressive forts quite quickly. Day four was a rainy day so we potted about in the cottage and local area. Watch the farmer and played being tigers which was actually more exhausting than going out... bring back the sunshine. Next day was Corfe. a lovely little village with quant thatched cottages and low beamed inns. A great place to explore with the miniature village and gardens - another great attraction that kept me and the family entertained.
All in all a lovely part of England that boasts some lovely walks and great family attractions (especially the steam train... Chu Chu Chu). We will definitely go back as there was so much we didn't get to see like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. We did try but the road was closed due army training (Ministry of Defence land apparently). So, Dorset gets the thumbs up me and the family and a great time to go as it really wasn't that busy.
