A visit to the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms

Cabinet war rooms FCODF05D229Last weekend I visited the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, in central London. Tickets provide you with entrance into both museums which are located together. The entrance fee also includes a free audio guide, making this a great value day out.

Churchill Museum
Spanning 90 years of his life, this museum is dedicated to the life and achievements of Sir Winston Churchill. The museum as you would expect offers plenty of iconic objects, clothes, documents, and films to see. However this museum really shines through with its interactive tools including the “Lifeline’, a fifteen meter-long interactive table, which dominates the museum space. It was great watching people of all ages interact with it to find out what Churchill was doing on a particular day or month throughout his 90 years.

The Cabinet War Rooms
The Cabinet War Rooms are where Churchill and his war Cabinet plotted the war underground, operating around the clock from the start of the war in 1939 right up to the end in 1945.

All the rooms are pretty much as they were left during the Second World War, so stepping into them is like stepping back in time, as you walk along the same dim corridors as Churchill did. Looking at where he and his team worked, ate and slept, it gives you an idea of the tough conditions they all had to live and work in. As you walk around the rooms including the map room you can almost feel the stress levels and hear the nose of people shouting information and orders over each other, and the haze of smoke which must have filled these rooms.

Bringing the Second World War to Life
Our trip coincided with Remembrance weekend, and two wonderful ladies where brought in to talk to visitors about their war experiences and to take questions.

One of the ladies was a child evacuee, moved from pillar to post around the country, the other an Air Warden. What came through from their stories was that despite the dangers they had to live through each day including bombs falling around them, people still pulled together and managed to get through it all.

Worth the Visit
This is really a great day out for all the family. The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms are part of the Imperial War Museums. To find out more about the museums I visited and others within the group please visit www.iwm.org.uk
