I love Saturday mornings, a lazy brunch with a newspaper and lots of coffee. The phone rang and it was Laura's Mum having their usual Saturday morning catch up, and I was reading about the latest scandal to hit when I overheard "it would be lovely to see you and Dad before he goes away on Monday" - now I should explain, we live in London, and Laura's parents live in Bath, spur of the moment meet ups don't tend to happen!
So before I even get to the motoring section we're off to the station and buying two return tickets to Salisbury to meet Laura's parents for lunch. The journey time from Clapham Junction is just over 1 hour 30 minutes - I've spent longer than that in traffic jams to get to the local supermarket! We found a great place for lunch called Fisherton Mill (http://www.fishertonmill.co.uk/) - originally built as a grain mill in 1880, it now houses a gallery and cafe exhibiting work from leading artistes, sculptures and furniture makers.
After lunch and a browse round the gallery we visited Salisbury Cathedral, (http://www.salisburycathedral.org.uk/) famous for having the tallest spire in Britain - which you can climb if you're feeling energetic enough. Just across from the Cathedral is Monpesson House (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-mompessonhouse/) a gorgeous 18th century house in the cathedral crescent and owned by the National Trust.
I really feel that we made the most of the day, especially as we were back in London for the evening we had planned with some friends. This has spurred us to make sure we do more with our free time, so rather than spending money in the sales this bank holiday I think we might just go exploring somewhere new......
