Who could believe it? Only three weeks ago England was experiencing its worst snow storms in decades. Last Saturday my family and I thought we’d take advantage of the unusually mild February sunshine and take a long walk on the South Downs.

I was absolutely delighted when I received a “Caterham Seven” experience for my birthday at venue near Oxford so we could make a weekend of it. The driving experience was excellent, the instructor giving you plenty of hints in order to get the most out of the car – then just as I was getting the hang of it my time was up!!

Where can 3 families with 10 kids under the age of 9 get together for a weekend in the middle of winter?
It is a challenge we face every year when we want to have a pre-Christmas party with our friends. This year our solution was to rent a hostel from the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) www.yha.org.uk. The YHA offers a wide selection of its hostels for rental during the winter months. The idea is that you have the whole place to yourself which is perfect for a large noisy group wanting to get together.

Back in September, Rae, Sian and I arranged a trip to the Isle of Wight in September through Isle of Wight Tourism.
We stayed one night at the Priory Bay Hotel, www.priorybay.co.uk – traditional décor, with large comfortable rooms, each with a different design. I had the grand, paneled room which turned out to be haunted, according to the hotel brochure but thankfully I was blissfully unaware until Sian told me at breakfast! The hotel has its own private beach, Priory Bay which is a short walk from the hotel and definitely its unique selling point.

I’ve been reading a lot about remote carp waters lately; rivers, ponds and lakes shrouded in mystery, deep in ancient woodland, and in particular how my home county Sussex is full of them. When out walking with my wife and our two-year old daughter in the summer, not too far from my home I discovered a secret of my own – a magnificent stretch of river. Its deep-water rested motionless under huge flowering lilies. Large dragonflies, colourful damsels and cabbage whites danced in the sunlight. I stood and gazed for a long time. My eyes wandered over the green lilies and onto their white flowers before moving across the water and onto the far bank, which was decorated with flowers and lush leafy bushes.

With the days being shorter and the weather colder it is nice to have something to look forward to. With this in mind we decided a weekend away would be a great idea. We wanted somewhere which was full of character, with plenty of heritage, beauty, and was relatively unknown.
